To create an effective remarketing campaign, you must understand the various types of remarketing audiences available and the different campaign types to utilize. Here are the most common options:
Remarketing Audiences
- Website Visitors: Users who have previously visited your website or specific web pages can be targeted with tailored ads or offers.

Creating and Setting Up Your Remarketing Campaign
To create and set up your Google Ads Remarketing campaign, follow these key steps:
Step 1: Create a Remarketing Audience
In your Google Ads account, navigate to ‘Tools’, then ‘Shared Library’, and select ‘Audience Manager’. You can then click the blue plus sign and choose the type of audience you want to create. To create an audience list that includes visitors to your website, select the ‘Website Visitors’, and choose your targeting conditions.
If you’ve linked Google Analytics to Google Ads, you also have the option of creating remarketing audiences using data available in Google Analytics. Watch our video covering remarketing with Google Analytics to learn more.
Step 2: Install Remarketing Tag
We recommend adding the Google Ads Remarketing tag to your website using Google Tag Manager. At a minimum, you will need the ‘Conversion ID’, which is the ID from your Google Tag associated with your Google Ads account. And if you created a dedicated remarketing tag, you will also need the ‘Conversion Label’.
Step 3: Configure a Remarketing Campaign
You can use your remarketing audience with an existing or new campaign. If you’re just getting started, we recommend creating a new campaign to ensure you’re not impacting the performance of your existing ads.
To create a new campaign, click the plus sign on the top left corner of the Google Ads interface and select ‘Campaign’. Select the option to create a campaign without guidance, then choose the type of campaign you want to create. Once you’ve completed the steps to create the campaign, select the campaign in the interface, then under ‘Campaigns’, select ‘Audiences’ under ‘Audiences, Keywords and Content’. You can then apply the remarketing list using the ‘Targeting’ option.
Step 4: Design Compelling Ads
Craft visually appealing ads that resonate with your target audience and showcase your unique selling points. Consider using responsive ads, ad extensions, and dynamic remarketing ads to optimize user experience and engagement.
Best Practices for Optim izing Your Remarketing Campaigns
To ensure you're making the most of your remarketing campaigns, adhere to these best practices:
- Segment Your Audiences: Divide your remarketing audience into smaller segments based on user behavior, interests, and preferences to deliver more targeted and relevant ads.
- Compelling Ad Creatives: Design attractive ads that represent your brand, emphasize benefits, and present clear calls-to-action (CTAs).
- Performance Monitoring and Analysis: Regularly monitor your campaign's performance metrics and adjust targeting, bidding, and ad creative strategies to optimize ROI.
- Use Audiences for Observation: Apart from targeting campaigns and ad groups using your remarketing audiences, you can also set them as ‘Observation’. This allows you to keep the original targeting, but use the audience for reporting and analysis in Google Ads.
