Back To School Resources for Digital Marketers
Loves Data
Remember the first day back to school? You left the house with a fresh haircut, packed lunch, slightly oversized uniform, matching socks and tight laces, ready to soak up knowledge like a brand new sponge. These days, we’re rushing out the door, with odd socks on, picking up a double espresso, hoping the day isn’t going to be too full of meetings. We’re taking you back to the days of the fresh haircut – here’s a roundup of some of our favourite blogs, courses and books available… Learning starts now!
Digital Analytics Power Hour
First up is Tim Wilson, Michael Helbling and Jim Cain’s 'Digital Analytics Power Hour' podcast, which is as fierce as the name suggests. Here are three reasons why you should tune in:
- Tim Wilson is hilarious
- You can learn cool, new analytics tips and tricks while you’re cleaning the house or riding the bus
- They cover a huge variety of analytics topics, from attribution to women in digital analytics – all in a neat little hour-long package.
Occam’s Razor
'Occam’s Razor', by digital marketing royalty Avinash Kaushik, is probably one of the more timeless blogs you’re going to find. By timeless we mean things he wrote about years ago are still applicable today, which is a rarity in the ever-changing digital realm. For example, his 2011 blog 'Best Social Media Metrics: Conversion, Amplification, Applause, Economic Value' is still a great go-to resource for analysing social media, even though social has rapidly changed over the past few years.
Google Analytics Blog
The official Google Analytics blog is awesome because it keeps you up-to-date with news, tips and relevant resources that will help you navigate Google Analytics. It’s a good blog to keep a solid eye on because you never know what feature they’ll release next.
Google AdWords Blog
The official Google AdWords blog is (predictably) also a great resource for you to stay informed about the latest Google AdWords news, best practices and case studies. Their most recent blog is a must-read, 'How we fought bad ads in 2015', is all about how Google is taking a stance on ads that carry malware, show false content or try to sell fake products. It’s also a little bit cleaner looking than the Google Analytics blog – we recommend you take a read.

'The Adventures of an IT Leader'
This book, by Robert D. Austin is one of renowned American software engineer, businessman and chairman of Alphabet Inc, Eric Schmidt’s favourites. It accompanies a new CIO on a series of cases and will help you learn how to face IT challenges of your own. Think ‘Choose Your Own Adventure’ but for high-powered IT executives.
'Zero to One: Notes on Startups, or How to Build the Future'
This book, by Peter Thiel, is one of the recommendations on Tesla CEO and SpaceX CEO, Elon Musk’s reading list. It's a self-help book showing the way to the type of future start-ups can build. Fun fact: Thiel inspired the character of Peter Gregory in the HBO hit series ‘Silicon Valley’.
'The Life-Changing Magic of Tidying Up: The Japanese Art of Decluttering and Organizing'
This book, by Marie Kondo is a favourite of Loves Data's CEO Benjamin Mangold. After a year writing 'Learning Google AdWords and Google Analytics’ he had accumulated quite a lot of clutter, and this book helped him get organised, for a fresh start.
Benjamin Mangold’s Book
Introducing your new office desk bible: Benjamin Mangold’s book, 'Learning Google AdWords and Google Analytics'. Never be without helpful digital marketing hints again! Whether you’re a newbie or known in the office as ‘the person to ask hard questions to’, you’re going to learn something from this book. Plus, you can truly embrace the concept of ‘back to school’ because it’s available as a textbook.
